Organizing & Policymaking

UTEC's work in civic engagement sets it apart from many youth development agencies.  In addition to helping youth with their personal and life goals, UTEC nurtures the interest of youth in civic matters.  From the street to the State House, staff exposes youth to the world beyond UTEC and contributes to the development of an educated and engaged populace.  UTEC provides youth with the opportunity to become involved in local- and state-level organizing, and youth learn how to form and sustain a grassroots campaign.

In our home city of Lowell, the heart of our local organizing work focuses on the coordination of City Council Candidate Forums during the election cycle every other year. For the months leading up to the Forum, youth involved in this planning process utilize the forum as a means to conduct a needs assessment, which can eventually serve as a launching ground for a future issues-based campaign.
