Police chief: Crackdown on gang activity may take years

Police Chief Alan DeNaro addressed the City Council and the public Tuesday night about the two murders in the city in May and the department’s plan to combat growing gang violence in Haverhill, warning that it could be years before marked improvement is seen.

While about 100 residents gathered downtown to discuss safety in their city at a vigil, DeNaro told the councilors his department is working on securing probable cause to arrest a suspect in the murder of 40-year-old Jeffrey Larkin, and is confident in the district attorney’s ability to prosecute the suspect in the murder of 20-year-old Nike Colon. Both men were shot to death within two weeks of each other. “The city was shaken when we had two horrible homicides take place within a couple- week period,” said Mayor James Fiorentini.
