Enrichment

Enrichment programming is offered to all youth throughout the year regardless of their school status.  UTEC has its own gym and meeting spaces to accomodate afternoon activities. We offer something for everyone, so come to UTEC to learn a new skill, express yourself through the music and words, and meet new people!

Basketball
Tired of scraping your knees on concrete outdoor courts?  Looking for a place to play ball during the cold winter months?  With an indoor court, UTEC is your place for basketball!  Take part in pick-up games, half-court 3-on-3, or full-court 5-on-5.  You can also try out for the UTEC basketball team and play against other youth centers from throughout the region.  Whether you're an amateur or you're NBA-bound, come by and show off your skills at UTEC!

Breakdancing
Whether your learning the two-step, mastering your air tracks, or just learning the b-boy lingo, you're welcome to join us in our open session to practice and meet local b-boys and b-girls.  Breakdancing is a form of dance that combines gymnastics, Brazilian capoeira and hip hop.  Alan Phung oversees the sessions and is here to help anyone who's new to breakdancing.

Sound Recording
The sound recording program at UTEC is a creative outlet for teens interested in both music artistry and production.  We offer a fully functional digital studio with the most recent versions of programs, including ProTools and Reason, to which teens are allowed access on their very first day in the studio.  Teens perform music, record everything that is created and receive instruction on a day-to-day basis from our on-site sound engineer, Whitney Love.

Young Women's Program
UTEC offers a special program for young women who are committed to a more just and gender-balanced world.  YWP’s develops the leadership skills of young women and encourages them to educate their peers about issues significant to women and girls in Lowell. YWP focuses on violence against women, the ways in which women are depicted in the media, and the factors that promote and hinder women’s health and self-image.  The YWP has organized a series of educational workshops with the goal of informing other teens about different types of abuse, how to speak out about preventing abuse, and where to get help. In the past, women in the program have organized Take Back the Night and Eve Ensler’s The Vagina Monologues. The program also partners with the Lowell Community Health Center and offers the sexual health program Making Proud Choices. With so many projects, there is something to engage every young woman.
